During our meeting Monday February 4, 2019 we honored Cydni Turner our Florida Atlantic University High School Rotary Scholar for the Month of February. She was selected by the FAU High School staff in recognition of character, ethics, morality, community service, and academic achievement.

Cydni is concurrently studying to complete high school and earn a college degree as a Software Engineer and 3D Modeler/Animator.  She told us she is also hoping to achieve a minor in French.  As an extra-curricular activity, Cydni volunteered at Lycee Franco Americain International School (LFA), serving at the front desk, scheduling students, and helping with student supervision in this French immersion school.  Although the high school requirement for community service is 100 hours, Cydni expects to have accumulated about 500 hours by the time she graduates high school in the spring.  She has been volunteering at her local library branch in Broward County, keeping library organized and supervising youth activities.  Cydni also serves her church, Koinonia Worship Center, by assisting with setup, cleanup, and occasional cooking for the breakfast café service enjoyed during Sunday fellowship activities.

While maintaining high academic status that has earned her a position among the National Merit Semi-finalists, Cydni also plays on the FAU HS Varsity Soccer team and the Sunrise Soccer Club.  Last year the Sunrise Soccer Club team won the State Cup, Southern Regionals, and Nationals in her age group.  She received recognition with the Golden Boot award for being top scorer.  When she continues her studies towards her bachelor degree, she is committed to play Division 1 soccer, hopefully for UCF or FAU.

Cydni receives family encouragement from her parents Ruben and Anita Turner, who accompanied her for our meeting.  Also present to encourage and honor her were FAU HS Assistant Principal Chris Rick and our Honorary Member and Interact Advisor Robin Barkes.  The sponsoring scholarship provider Ravi Goolcharan, owner of Gulf Atlantic Paining, was pleased to offer Cydni congratulations and additional encouragement, giving the sponsor check to Rotary Scholar Co-chair Mathieu Daquin.

After Cydni responded to questions from club members, President Ana Londono and Mathieu honored Cydni with the plaque and invited her and her parents to the Gala in May when scholarship checks will be granted.
