Elder Law and More: Barry Siegel
At our next meeting September 23, 2019, Past President of Rotary Boca Raton Sunset Barry D. Siegel will speak about elder law and more.  Barry has in-depth knowledge of elder Law, including how to protect your assets by qualifying for Medicaid and Veterans’ Benefits. 
 
Additionally, Barry can help you take action now to protect your business from creditors and lawsuits as well as plan for your business’s future – and yours.
 
Barry has authored or co-authored many articles on Estate Planning and Asset Protection strategies, including The Book of Estate Planning Strategies. He is a columnist for the Boca Raton Tribune, and he has been quoted in the South Florida Business Journal, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. He’s been a guest on numerous television and radio shows; and he is currently writing a book on International Asset Protection.
 
Barry also frequently lectures at many organizations and private functions; and he has served as an Adjunct Professor for the Legal Studies Program at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. He has traveled extensively teaching Estate Planning and Asset Protection to CPAs, Financial Advisors, Insurance Agents and Trust Officers. Barry has also been a featured speaker on Estate Planning and Asset Protection Issues from a global perspective at the prestigious Global Wealth Summit held in Nassau, Bahamas.
World Day of Peace Celebration with FAU 9-21-2019
Past District 6930 Governor Steve Laine is leading our club in a plan to celebrate the International Day of Peace with Florida Atlantic University Saturday afternoon September 21, 2019.
 
In preparation for Peace Day, Mayor Scott Singer stopped in to provide our club a special proclamation on behalf of the City of Boca Raton.  The special proclamation recognized all of the six Rotary Clubs in Boca Raton for their contribution as leaders locally and globally in working towards peace throughout the world.  Click here and scroll down to see content of proclamation.   
 
The International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") is observed around the world each year on 21 September. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.
 
The Peace Day Event will be held on FAU Boca Raton campus and will offer two sessions: a morning session expecting mostly students from 10:30 to 11:50 am including video streaming of the 2019 Merida, Mexico Nobel Peace Laureate Summit Plenary Session 6 "The Power of Law vs The Law of Power;" and the evening session from 4:30 - 8 pm including welcoming thoughts from Doug as well as Rotary District 6930 Governor, Dance portraying Nonviolence, and streaming connection with Merida, Yucatan, Mexico for the Awards and Final Declaration for 2019.

Featured Rotarian John Ross 9-16-2019
Our featured Rotarian for September 2019 is John Ross, Executive Secretary of Rotary Boca Raton Sunset; he grew up in Brooklyn NY, and graduated from Syracuse University with a BA in Political Science, and State University of NY at Albany with a Masters in Public Administration.   John and his wife Maxine live in Highland Beach Florida with their dog, Fifa. They have one son, Andrew, who lives in Tampa.
 
John is President of JRITLLC, an information technology consulting firm helping Governments and Industry become more efficient through the use of information technology. When not working he enjoys the outdoors, fishing, reading, and civic affairs.
 
John reviewed a few of the highlights of his career following graduation from SUNY Albany, beginning with landing his first position with New York City by writing an essay in response to an article in the newspaper.  He was among nine who were ultimately selected for an Urban Fellowship, which resulted in his early political training and civic employment beginning with the Department of Social Services participating in Project Management for NYC.
 
Several projects later he stepped out into private sector consulting, leading a rehabilitation services team; and then he was back into the city administration serving the Department of Finance.  Moving back into the private sector again, John lead projects for American Management Systems (AMS) and as Information Technology began to emerge, he had an opportunity to manage the data center.  After a few interesting and complex experiences, John wound up in the midst of acquisition and merger when Conseillers en Gestion et Informatique (CGI) acquired AMS. 
 
When much of the data center was moved to India, it provided an opportunity to experience multicultural management incorporating software development teams around the globe: India, Canada, and USA.  John loved his travel to India and learning about their culture, telling us how kind and hospitable they were.  He also told us how beautiful the countryside was.
 
John  concluded his story with a short description of one of his favorite Rotary projects: Josh the Otter, a water safety education program for pre-K children.  He enjoys reading the story that ends with a bigger than life otter dancing and singing about floating and never swimming alone.
 
After a brief Q & A, President Sue thanked John for sharing some of his life and career experiences, as well as his leadership in our club, especially looking forward to the Josh the Otter project John leads in the spring.

John Ross again introduced his guest Louis Reidenberg, Attorney; John believes Lou would be a great addition to our club, so we provided more information for Lou and encouraged him to view our website, stay tuned.  Nice to meet you again Lou, we hope to see you again soon. 
 
John also introduced his wife Maxine, and Jerry introduced his wife Beverley; it's always nice to have our spouses and significant others join us at our meetings.  Thanks for dining with us ladies, wonderful company!

President Sue Meister says: "Congratulations Fred Licata on becoming Paul Harris Fellow!" 
 
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation.  Rotary established the recognition in 1957 to encourage and show appreciation for substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships. 
 
Ambassadorial Scholarships (founded 1947) was a program of the Rotary Foundation. The program ended in 2013 and was replaced by the Rotary Global Grant Scholarship, which expands on the Ambassadorial mission, by now ensuring that every Rotary Scholar advances Rotary's International mission to " promote service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace."  Rotary focus on world peace supports the United Nations call for peace on International Day of Peace ("Peace Day"), Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.
 
Thank you, Fred, for your support of the Rotary Foundation!  The Rotary Foundation is among the most efficient charitable organizations in the world; in addition to the support for peace, the Rotary Foundation initiated the drive to end polio throughout the world, which may soon be accomplished through continuing efforts now coordinated by World Health Organization with help and support by many others including The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

July 8-Nov 30: 2019 PAL Half Marathon:  Donations benefit Boca PAL and Rotary vocation awards.  Phase 2 began 9/1/19 to recruit donors for supplies, food, and drink for race day, weekly sign-up sheet at club meetings.  Race is scheduled for 11/30/19.  Phase 1 began June 10, 2019 to recruit sponsors for the race, we exceded goal, but additional sponsors or donations still sought.  Second Phase 1 milestone is 10/1/19 for website presence.
