1/20/2020 No Meeting: MLK Day of Service
January 20, 2020
Martin Luther King Jr. Day was created to celebrate the life and work of the Civil Rights Era leader.  Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was signed into law in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan.  The first year that all 50 states recognized the holiday was in 2000.
Inspired by the work of Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr also encouraged peaceful protest regarding class oppression and maltreatment.  His stance of non-violence has helped to shape the way movements have been structured around the world.  One international city that observes Dr. King's day is Toronto, Canada.
In addition to his work in civil rights, Dr. King also spoke up for the disadvantaged and impoverished.  In 1994, President Bill Clinton signed federal legislation that transformed the holiday into the Martin Luther King Day of Service.  People are encouraged to volunteer in honor of Dr. King.
Rotary Motto: Service Above Self
Rotary unites more than a million people in service: together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.
A Rotary Cause: Promoting Peace
Rotary fosters understanding across cultures. We train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict and help refugees who have fled dangerous areas.  Rotary Action Groups and Rotary Fellowships encourage international bonds that help develop partnerships among Rotary clubs around the world to solve problems through cooperation and mutual respect and understanding.
A Rotary Cause: Fighting Disease
We are resolved to rid the world of polio forever (only a few cases remain in a few countries).  We also educate and equip communities to stop other diseases and expand access to health care.
A Rotary Cause: Providing Clean Water
We help bring sustainable clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to more people every day. We don’t just build wells and walk away.  For example, five clubs in USA, France, UK, and Nepal work together to provide filters for clean water to drink in remote and impoverished locations such as mountain villages in Nepal, then follow up with training and support to develop community responsibility to maintain the filter systems.
January 2020 Featured Rotarian Ana Londono
Our Featured Rotarian for January 2020 is Ana Londono, speaking at our meeting Monday January 13, 2020.  Ana is an accomplished real estate professional with a successful real estate career record for 15 years. She recently received the prestigious Lang’s Diamond Award for performing productively as a multi-million-dollar producer.
Ana speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese. She is very involved in the community as the Immediate Past President of the Rotary Club Boca Raton Sunset and the Secretary for the Beach Condominium Association of Boca Raton and Highland Beach.
Ana has a comprehensive understanding of the beach and waterfront real estate market and is committed to honesty and integrity. A problem-solver first and foremost, Ana always makes sure her clients are satisfied and have the peace of mind that she has the skills needed to complete every purchase or rental transaction with ease!
During the meeting recognizing Ana as the Featured Rotarian, she told us a few stories from her experiences beginning in Medellin, Columbia and continuing through Argentina, England, and the USA.  Throughout, she told us how she enjoyed life in happy environments even during the violent periods in Columbia.  The happy environment was developed by her close knit and loving family, led by her grandmother.  She said that happy attitude and loving what she does has led her to success.  Of course she also indicated that she chooses to do things she loves to do, which strengthens her happy attitude.  Thanks for sharing Ana!  A delightful Featured Rotarian!
Rotary Boca Raton Downtown Library Appeal
Rotary Boca Raton Downtown has embarked on a project to help the Friends of Library Book Store, and they have suggested that other Boca Rotary clubs may want to participate as well.  Here is their announcement:
The Friends of the Boca Raton Library Book Store is collecting books for resale!   Friday the 17th at 2:00pm we will be delivering slightly used novels, self-help, children’s books etc. to the Downtown Library. ( No text books, encyclopedias, magazines)  What a great project for all the Boca Rotaries to be involved with.  Please reach out to your members and join us in giving books to the Book Store.   If you are unable to meet at the Library on Friday, I can come by to collect them at your next meeting or you are welcome to drop them at our next meeting at noon on the 17th at the Renaissance Hotel.  I believe we’ll be doing this often and on throughout the year and will keep you in the loop!
Our club contact is Fred Licata, Downtown contact is Marilyn Wilson.
