Elder Law and More: Barry Siegel
At our meeting September 23, 2019, Past President of Rotary Boca Raton Sunset Barry D. Siegel spoke about elder law and more.  Barry has in-depth knowledge of elder Law, including how to protect your assets by qualifying for Medicaid and Veterans’ Benefits.

Barry began by telling us about some of the mistakes that are often made when preparing a personal estate plan for elder years, such as failing to fund a trust set up to pass estate elements without requiring probate. He also told us about some of the requirements to qualify for Medicaid if that need arises during elder years.  Some of the appropriate elder law considerations can be very important during estate planning to optimize family asset protection and income streams when experiences the unexpected situations in life.

Sharing a personal experience, Barry emphasized why it's important to plan for the unexpected.  Most of us don't expect situations we hear about to occur in our life, but surprises happen.  Such an event took away important physical capabilities for Barry, which interrupted his ability to perform normal tasks, fortunately a temporary incapacity, but nevertheless a wake up for him bringing his focus onto elder law.   He went on to tell us about simple and straightforward actions that can be taken to protect assets and optimize income for a variety of unexpected situations; also recognizing the importance of understanding the laws that help, especially elder law.  During his presentation and the following Q&A, it became clear that Barry can help you take action now to protect your business from creditors and lawsuits as well as plan for your business’s future – and yours, even those surprises we think only happen to someone else.

Barry has authored or co-authored many articles on Estate Planning and Asset Protection strategies, including The Book of Estate Planning Strategies. He is a columnist for the Boca Raton Tribune, and he has been quoted in the South Florida Business Journal, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. He’s been a guest on numerous television and radio shows; and he is currently writing a book on International Asset Protection.

Barry also frequently lectures at many organizations and private functions; and he has served as an Adjunct Professor for the Legal Studies Program at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. He has traveled extensively teaching Estate Planning and Asset Protection to CPAs, Financial Advisors, Insurance Agents and Trust Officers. Barry has also been a featured speaker on Estate Planning and Asset Protection Issues from a global perspective at the prestigious Global Wealth Summit held in Nassau, Bahamas.
