FAU HS February Rotary Scholar Luke Schuknecht
During our weekly meeting Monday, 2/3/2020, we will honor, Luke Schuknecht our Florida Atlantic University High School 2019-20 Rotary Scholar for February.  The FAU HS Rotary Scholar of the Month is selected by the FAU HS staff in recognition of character, ethics, morality, community service, and academic achievement.

We hope Luke will tell us about his experiences working towards a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science (expected in spring 2021) while achieving High School graduation (expected in spring 2020).  We also hope to hear about his many activities in robotics and mechanics, while serving the tech community by teaching and mentoring younger and less experienced students.  We hope he will tell us more about the Tech Garage Summer Camp of  A. D. Henderson University School and other interesting tech challenges for students like SeaPearch and FIRST Tech Challenge.

Congratulations Luke!
1-27-20 FAU Research - Karin Scarpinato
During our meeting Monday January 27, 2020 Karin Scarpinato told us about Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Research.  Karin is the current Senior Associate Vice President for Research at Florida Atlantic University, overseeing the strategic planning and operations of the university-wide Division of Research.

She began by showing us the geographic area of focus and some of the locations for FAU research, which include settings strategically located  along a corridor of more than 110 miles of coastline between Americas Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean.  In addition to the general sites of Lake Okeechobee and Florida Everglades, there are six campus locations: Harbor Branch, Jupiter, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Dania Beach, and Davie.

Karin identified three topical categories of research as Artificial Intelligence, Environment, and Health.  Artificial Intelligence research focuses in three main components: sensing, computing, and connectivity.  FAU research incorporates all of these into engineering, medical, education and other areas of research.  Projects include modeling of extreme weather events, ocean surveillance, and mobility intelligence.

Environment research involves harmful algal bloom, aquacluture (cultivating fish for food), shark migration, sea turtle hatching, sea level rise, and similar areas of focus.  Health research projects include autism, sleep analyses, brain exercise, and drug usage.

Concluding her presentation, Karin encouraged us to get involved by attending the Research in Action seminar series, participating in the Ask a Scientist podcasts, or joining the Research Blog.  You can learn more about FAU Research here.

Dr. Scarpinato is an affiliate faculty in the Department of Biology and holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the University of Goettingen in Germany.  Her research has centered around novel therapies for cancer.
Visiting Past Member Victor Smirnov
It was nice to see past member Victor Smirnow visit us again at our meeting January 27, 2020.  Victor is in town briefly traveling from his home in Brazil, he recently visited Rotary Club da Bahia, Salvador-Bahia, Brasil, who sent their greetings with club pennant.  President Elect Fred Licata returned the favor sending our club pennant home with Victor.  Our members who remember Victor's active and enthusiastic participation in the club enjoyed reminiscing with Victor.  Great to see you again, Victor!  Hope to see you again soon when your in town.
