April 4, 2020 Tribute Luncheon Cancelled
Unfortunately, the Testimonial Luncheon our Rotary Boca Raton Sunset club planned to offer tribute to PDG Steve Laine for the nearly 50 years of his Rotary service has been cancelled.  The tribute was scheduled for Saturday, April 4, 2020 at Maggiano's from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

PDG Charlie Bromberg, event chairman, has indicated that prepaid reservations will be refunded, but those who wish to support the funds raised as tribute may send checks to Rotary Boca Raton Sunset Scholarships, Inc. at PO Box 810427, Boca Raton, FL 33481-0427 with "Steve Laine Tribute" in the memo field.  All funds collected will be donated to the Guatemala Tomorrow Fund, which is one of Steve' favorite Rotary global service projects.

The Guatemala tomorrow Fund is a non-denominational, non-profit organization that raises funds and provides logistical support for Ak'Tenamit.  Ak’ Tenamit is a Q’eqchi Maya development organization in eastern Guatemala.  The Ak’ Tenamit mission is to enable the indigenous people of Guatemala to become self-sustaining by supporting projects that: Improve health care, Reduce illiteracy, Promote environmentally sound agriculture, Enterprise development to raise income levels, Increase awareness and participation in civic affairs.

Prior to founding Ak’ Tenamit in 1992, Steve Dudenhoefer owned a successful landscaping business in South Florida. In 1990, he decided to visit Guatemala to discover why many of his employees, Mayans from Guatemala, had immigrated to the US to work and sent every penny they earned back home. He met people who lived on $1 a day, children without schools, mothers without vital medicine for their babies. Deeply affected by this experience, he returned home, sold his businesses and started Asociación Ak’ Tenamit in 1992 with the help of local village leaders. Today Ak’ Tenamit is run entirely by the Q’eqchi people, and Steve remains involved as Chief Technical Adviser, assisting managers and the Board but concentrating on fundraising and networking.
In the same year that Ak’ Tenamit was founded, Steve’s friends and family founded The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund to create a mechanism for raising funds for the project.
